Het boek is opgebouwd uit vijf delen. Daarbij is uitgegaan van de gangbare indeling in ontwikkelingsaspecten: de lichamelijke ontwikkeling, de sociaal-emotionele ontwikkeling, de cognitieve ontwikkeling, de morele en godsdienstige ontwikkeling. Elk deel beschrijft een ontwikkelingsaspect, de leerprocessen en de neurologische processen die hierbij een rol spelen. “Het kan ook anders” is de titel van het afsluitende hoofdstuk van elk deel. Aan de hand van een casus wordt een ontwikkeling geschetst die anders verloopt. In de Bijlagen worden enkele andere leer- en ontwikkelingsvarianten beschreven; ook hier aan de hand van een casus.
Dit boek is bedoeld voor ieder die op een professionele wijze kinderen begeleidt in hun ontwikkeling of daarvoor wordt opgeleid.
